The Philosophy of Proper Maintenance
Maintenance plays such an integral part in the ability for any pipe organ to perform properly. Good maintenance in the hands of a skilled craftsman, produces years of audience satisfaction and pleasure from both the congregation in worship and the concert-goer alike.
Without proper care, the pipe organ, whether classical or theatre, will begin to show signs of malfunction - most of the time when least expected - in the middle of performance.
There is something magical about the organ - it moves the souls of people.
Maintenance pays for itself over the longer term of an organ's life. Unlike electronics that are difficult to troubleshoot and costly to fix, the diligent care of a fine pipe organ brings pleasure and joy to all many times past the cost of keeping it in peak performing state.
Caring for the Instrument
In reality, the theatre pipe organ is a cousin to its liturgical counterpart. In both, every single phase of organ maintenance requires a particular craft.
Organ maintenance requires the knowledge to fashion pipes of lead and tin, assemble mechanisms, build cabinets, a knowledge of metallurgy, electricity, physics and more. It is not easy to learn the complicated work nor are there formal schools to teach the trade.
It takes an extremely comprehensive knowledge of the organ, clear artistic vision, and grounded business skills to properly plan and carry out a project which results in a finished, successfully maintained musical instrument.
